Jennifer Aniston's dog, Norman, safely returned home by paparazzi in Malibu, CA

Norman Aniston seen returning home in Malibu, CA

According to TMZ, Jennifer Aniston’s senior dog, Norman, was found after he escaped from Ms. Aniston’s home in Malibu, California. Norman is shown being walked by an unidentified person back to Ms. Aniston’s home. Norman appears to be unharmed, although TMZ reports that he was almost hit by a car.
From the video, Norman is wearing a collar, by which he is being lead back to his home. It is unclear as to if Norman’s collar has identification to ensure Norman’s safe return to his home.
Besides wearing a collar with up to date identification, Norman would be more likely to be returned to Ms. Aniston if he has a microchip. When a pet is found and lacks identification which would trace the pet back to its’ owner, a veterinary hospital or animal shelter will scan the pet to see if a microchip has been implanted. The microchip gives a sequence of numbers and/or letters. The microchip manufacturer keeps on file the contact information for the pet’s owner and the owner can then be contacted. It is very important to keep your contact information up to date with the manufacturer of the microchip. In my clinical practice I have encountered situations where a pet scans positive for a microchip, yet the owner’s contact information was not been kept up to date. Subsequently, the owner could not be contacted and the pet was not easily returned to the owner.
Geriatric pets are more likely to have visual and cognitive abnormalities that increase the likelihood that they may wander away from the home and get lost. If you have a geriatric pet, please make sure the pet has a physical examination with your veterinarian at least every 6 months. Always keep your contact information visible on your pet and consider having a microchip implanted to ensure your pet’s safe return should the visible contact information be inadvertently removed.
