Jenna Betti, a 14-year-old California girl, was reportedly sucked under a freight train that killed her while she was retrieving her cell phone from the train tracks over the weekend, according to a Huffington Post report on Monday.

The teen was near Martinez, California – in the San Francisco Bay area - on Sunday evening with her boyfriend. They were on the tracks when an eastbound Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway freighter went around the bend. The crew of the train stated that they saw the two teens jump out of the way as the train neared, but Betti returned to get her cell phone.

Dena Betti, the young girl’s mother posted to Facebook that her daughter had dropped her cell phone and went back to retrieve it. According to the mother, she didn’t judge the approach, and the train created a vacuum and it sucked her in. As one can imagine, the mother wrote, “We are beyond devastated.”

Betti was a popular 8th grade student at Martinez Junior High School and a star soccer player. A vigil was scheduled for Tuesday at her school.
