Great news for theatre fans, the legendary “Jekyll and Hyde” opens at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood, Tuesday, February 12th. A great show to be sure, but the word is out that this production of “Jekyll and Hyde” is nothing like what grandma remembers.
I had the great pleasure of speaking recently with Richard White a veteran and distinguished actor, dancer and singer who is in the cast of this “Jekyll and Hyde” as Sir Danvers Carew. Richard White indeed has a long and highly successful career on stage having appeared in “Show Boat,” “Carousel,” “Oklahoma’” and “Camelot” to name but a few. But everyone will remember his voice performance as Gaston in “Beauty and the Beast.”
So I asked Richard point blank if the rumors were true that this production of “Jekyll and Hyde” was indeed remarkably different from previous incarnations and he immediately and unequivocally said “yes.” He then explained that this “Jekyll and Hyde” was: “More Victoria Secret than Victorian.” Already I am hooked.
He went on to explain that while it remains the same basic story the sound and the look has been re-conceived and made more contemporary. Richard White, a member of the touring troupe, told me that everywhere they have been the audience response has been wildly enthusiastic.
Now in just a few days Richard White along with Constantine Maroulis, Deborah Cox and the entire cast will be on stage at the magnificent Pantages Theatre in Hollywood. Richard told me that “The sound is so exciting and the story fascinating” and I believe it. This production of Jekyll and Hyde is on its way to Broadway and as a rare treat we on the West Coast get to enjoy it first. Absolutely I will be there, hope you will join me.
