Jefferson Davis birthday celebration

A celebration is underway commemorating the 203rd birthday of Jefferson Davis.

Jefferson Finis Davis (June 3, 1808 – December 6, 1889) was a leader in every sense of the word. Although he was born in Louisiana he represented Mississippi. His life and career was very complex and dedicated. After graduating from the United Stated Military Academy in West Point his career went from military to congressional and onto President of the Confederate States. Afterwards he retired near Biloxi, Mississippi where he wrote his memoirs of the war. His home in Biloxi was named Beauvoir that gave him the quiet and peace he dearly welcomed.

In November of 1889 he passed away while in New Orleans from pneumonia. His funeral was the largest the South has ever seen. It is estimated that over 200,000 people attended. Jefferson Davis was interred in the Metairie Cemetery in Louisiana. But in 1893 he was re-interred in the Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia. Virginia is considered the Confederate capital where he was finally laid to rest.
