Just as winter is beginning to poke its snowy, cold fingers into the northern reaches of the U.S., Jeep announced on Oct. 23 that a new special edition - the 2014 Jeep Wrangler Polar Edition - would be arriving in November to meet the challenges of winter driving in North America.
Though not expected to sell many (or any) in Antarctica, the new 2014 Jeep Wrangler Polar Edition is well equipped to perform there if needed and in North American too (if the weather would get that bad) as signified by its unique cold weather "Polar Badge".
The "Polar Badge" displays the geo-coordinates - (78° S and 106° E) - that correspond to the location of Vostok in Antarctica: the exact point where the absolute severest temperature in the world was recorded at minus 128.56° F.
This new special edition Jeep Wrangler was debuted at the Frankfurt Auto Show last month and follows the arrival of another special edition - the 2014 Jeep Wrangler Dragon - that had debuted earlier at the Bejing Auto Show. It will be available in both two- and four-door Unlimited versions.
The new Wrangler Polar Edition takes many of its styling cues from the well known Jeep Wrangler Sahara but with variants starting with the Powerdome hood with a special three-color decal featuring the outline of mountains that appear on the Polar Badge and are also repeated on the seat backs.
Clad in a brand-new bold Hydro Blue finish, features like the new front grille with a Gloss Black Jeep logo above and Gloss Black 18" alloy wheels further enhance the distinctive look of the vehicle.
On the inside, black heated leather seats have distinctive Pearl White accent stitching and the “Polar” logo embroidered on the upper portion of the backrests; a leather-wrapped steering wheel with Pearl White stitching and high-gloss Ceramic White painted bezels on the instrumentation continues the polar look.
The Pearl White accent stitching is also found also on the door armrests and center console lid and the passenger-side dashboard grab bar and dashboard vent rings are finished in high-gloss Ceramic White.
The interior is finished out with an all-new cluster overlay with rings also painted high-gloss Ceramic White that surrounds a blue instrument background with the “Polar” logo. Mopar tread-pattern slush mats complete the interior appointments of the new Wrangler Polar Edition.
In addition to the all-new Hydro Blue, the Jeep Wrangler Polar Edition model is also available in Billet Silver Metallic and Bright White exterior colors.
All of the traditional Jeep DNA features that make the Wrangler a superb off-roader are included in the 2014 Wrangler Polar Edition.
They include the Dana 30 front axle and powerful Dana 44 rear axle; Command-Trac NV241 part-time, two-speed transfer case with a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio and the Trac-Lok anti-spin rear differential with an available electronic locking differential.
Standard equipment on the inside includes automatic climate control, leather-wrapped steering wheel with integrated controls, heated front seats, height-adjustable driver seat, Electronic Vehicle Information Centre (EVIC) and cruise control.
The new limited-edition model will be powered by the Pentastar 3.6-liter V-6 engine that delivers 285 hp and 260 ft.-lbs. of torque and is paired to a standard six-speed manual or an available five-speed automatic transmission.
Jeep did not provide pricing for the new 2014 Jeep Wrangler Polar Edition with their announcement (the Wrangler Dragon MSRP is $36,095). They also did not indicate if this special edition was going to be limited production like the recently added Wrangler Dragon.
