Saturday and Sunday news is filled with reports of Jeanette McCurdy growing up – or rather speaking out as she denies any pretense of being a role model. MSN reported on Saturday that her hit series “Sam & Cat” is now cancelled because of her notorious off screen behavior. According to the report McCurdy has left Nickelodeon completely.
According to NY Daily News on Sunday, part of the decision for the show cancellation resulted after McCurdy refused to attend the Kids’ Choice Award show to pick up her award for Best TV Comedy. That seems a little flimsy of a reason for some people since other issues of being a role model seem to be in the news. This last March, racy photos of McCurdy in nothing more than underwear were leaked online, allegedly by an ex- boyfriend. Seems that McCurdy was non-apologetic and has lashed out on social media during a fan chat conducted by the website Reddit , declaring that she is not a role model. Many parents might agree with her. McCurdy wrote:
"I am not a role model. I don't claim to be, I don't try to be, and I don't want to be. This world is one seemingly most keen on judgment and negativity, despite all the hearts and smiley emoticons. To remove myself from the role model battle, the falsified standard set by the bubblegum industry, is -- in my eyes -- to remove myself from the counterintuitive battle of attempting to be something perfect while being glaringly aware of my imperfections."
Over the past five years we have seen them come and go, the teen actresses that be-bop across the screen and into our hearts. Sadly they grow up and often the lifestyles of the young adults do not make for a graceful transition into adulthood on screen. Lindsay Lohan maybe the most notorious bad girl who was in the news from everything from shoplifting to drug and alcohol abuse. Lindsay Lohan has managed to stay out of the limelight recently, but here struggles with parents, alcohol and her legal battles kept her from pursuing her career fully. Let’s hope that McCurdy manages to stay off that destructive path.
Jennette McCurdy is still young and no doubt very talented. Will she continue down the path so many young stars have taken? Although many parents may look at her as a teenager, in reality she is over 21 and an adult. The star is a singer and songwriter as well a talented actress and the break away from the teen shows and Nickelodeon may be the best thing she could do for her career. It could also ultimately lead to a separation in the industry since actresses are role models, like it or not.
