The riskiest couture show of fashion week Spring 2012 was evidently Jean-Paul Gaultier’s collection in which honored Amy Winehouse. Just by glancing through the photos, you will see a short timeline of Amy’s fashion forward style from beginning to end. Gaultier didn’t leave anything out either and the show featured beehive hairdos, heavy black eyeliner, black veils, and lit cigarettes. He seemed to be truly praising the late singer and was quoted by Women’s Wear Daily saying that, “I think Amy Winehouse was truly a fashion icon" even though the designer never even met Amy.
Sill, the public is not in 100% agreement with Gaultier’s decision and most people are questioning if this homage was a little too soon. In fact, the Winehouse family went public yesterday saying they did not appreciate the gesture. The Sun reported that Amy’s dad expressed discomfort with Gaultier’s use of his daughter’s image. Mitch Wineshouse was quoted as saying, “The family was upset to see those pictures; they were a total shock. We're proud of her influence on fashion but find black veils on models, smoking cigarettes with a barbershop quartet singing her music in bad taste."
It hasn’t even been a year since the tragic death of the amazing singer and although her influences may have stayed strong, it’s hard to say if this is best way to remember that.
