JD Gordon energizes Augusta in hockey debut

One of the new arrivals to the Augusta RiverHawks organization is defenseman JD Gordon.  In his debut game against the Huntsville Havoc, fans saw his style of hard hitting hockey.  For Augusta, that’s icing on the cake when talented players lace up their skates to agitate the opposing team.

Before coming to Augusta, Gordon had begun his pro (rookie) career with the Federal Hockey League.

“Before I came here, I played in the Federal Hockey League up north in Cape Cod; the Cape Cod Blue Fins,” Gordon said.  “Played there about twenty-two games.  Ralph called and asked me if I wanted to come down.  Right away I grabbed the opportunity.  Now I’m here.”

Gordon says he a physical player.

“Yeah, I try to be,” he said. “A big part of my game is to use my size to my advantage, throwing my body around going down the boards.  I think a big part of the reason I’m here is because of my physical play.  I don’t shy away from hits.  I like playing the body.”

His sparkplug style of play didn’t just appear overnight or when he began his pro career.  It had been built some time before that.

“I played five years in eastern juniors,” Gordon said. “I only did two years of college (Nichols and Becker Colleges) because it wasn’t really my type of game.  It was more skating and not physical play.  So, when I had the opportunity to go play pro in the Federal Hockey League, I jumped in.  It’s my kind of hockey.”

Gordon introduced himself to Augusta fans with his aggressive style of play; the kind that has made the Garden City one of the central hubs for hockey in Georgia over the past decade.

As for being in the south, especially with the warm winter weather concentrating itself in our area, Gordon says he loves the fans.

“I love it here,” he said.  “Everyone is very friendly and polite.  They give you everything to excel here, a great atmosphere for a hockey player and I love the crowd here. “
