The Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City’s annual Youth Triathlon takes place Sunday morning, June 27 at 7 a.m. at the Jewish Community Campus, 5801 W. 115th St., in Overland Park, Kansas, and the grounds of Sprint, which adjoins the campus. The race is sanctioned by USA Triathlon.
The JCC Triathlon allows youth, ages 4 to 17, to compete in a fun setting complete with food, music and an award for every participant.
The triathlon includes swimming, a bicycle/tricycle ride and a run; participants should bring their own bicycle/tricycle to the race. The event is broken down into four different categories based upon age of the participant. There is a fifth category for teams.
The race categories and distances are:
• TRI FOR TOTS (4 - 5 year olds):
Swim 25 yards in the JCC’s zero-entry pool, bike/trike .75 miles, run .25 mile
• SHORT COURSE (6 - 10 year olds):
swim 100 yards, bike 3 miles, run 1 mile
• LONG COURSE (11 - 14 year olds):
swim 200 meters, bike 5 miles, run 1.5 miles
• ELITE COURSE (15 - 17 year olds):
swim 300 meters, bike 6.5 miles, run 2.2 miles
• Team: 2 or 3 member team, ages totaling:
24 yrs and under - short course
25 yrs and older - long course
Participation fees are $41 per individual/$75 per team if registered by June 25 (today!) ; after today, fees increase to $51 per individual/$85 per team. Prizes include a medal for every competitor, t-shirt, hat and a chance to win a new bicycle from Bike of America. Trophies are awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners in each age group.
“The JCC Kids Triathlon provides a fun and healthy opportunity for kids to build confidence, learn about fitness and achieve a personal goal this summer,” said Erika Aanestad, direct service coordinator.
