JBLM soldier pleads guilty to rape and murder

Yesterday, a Joint Base Lewis-McChord soldier pleaded guilty to charges that he fatally stabbed his wife on post in August and then raped her 14-year-old daughter.

Staff Sgt. Robert S. Chiaravallotti, 41, is charged with murder, assault of a child and rape of a child.

Chiaravallotti told a military judge that he stabbed his wife, Dionne Chiaravallotti in the early hours of Aug. 25. His plan was to kill his stepdaughter by stabbing her, as well.

While it is unknown if Chiaravallotti’s original intent was to rape the child and the wife got in the way, he stated otherwise to the military judge; his intent was to stab his stepdaughter after she saw him kill her mother.

The Tacoma News Tribune reported that Judge Maj. Stefan R. Wolfe has yet to accept Chiaravallotti’s plea, at which point he would determine a sentence.

At the time of the alleged rape and killing, Chiaravallotti was stationed in South Korea where he served with the Eighth Army Band.

If convicted in military court, Chiaravallotti faces a mandatory minimum life sentence.
