In an online relationship, the underage victim indicated to a Joint Base Lewis-McChord Soldier that she was age 15; that alone should have been enough for the Soldier to hit “delete.”
Instead, Glen Winans, 47, pursued the relationship that started when he was deployed to Afghanistan; he is now being held for the rape of a 13-year-old girl from Kelso, Wash.
Winans allegedly drove from JBLM in the Tacoma area to Kelso, a 90 minute car trip down Interstate 5, first to take the child to a movie, then, he had sex with her.
According to Pierce County prosecutor Mark Lindquist’s office, the Soldier brought the child to his home in Lakewood last Friday, Oct. 25, where he raped her again.
A perceptive waitress at a Lakewood cafe stopped the abuse from continuing when she saw the Soldier and the little girl Saturday morning.
Seattle’s KOMO News online reported yesterday:
The two were eating at a Lakewood cafe Saturday morning when waitress Kelly Attinello overheard Winans tell the victim he liked young girls, investigators said. Attinello then called police.
"I served the food and he was holding her hand all romantically. I thought, no something is not right. It's not right," Attinellos said.
Attinellos said she's seen Winans in the restaurant before, and she said he'd even talked to her about dating younger women.
Attinellos followed her gut and did the right thing; she called local authorities.
Winans denied having sexual relations with the little girl however he confessed to detectives, “that he did not like women in their 30s and 40s because they are typically out of shape and overweight.”
Bail is set at $100,000.
Examiner's Note: Kelly Attinello is a hero for doing the right thing that day. I'm sending her a thank you card with a small tip to let her know her act of responsibility did not go unnoticed by the masses. Her place of employment is Kimberly's Café 11126 Gravelly Lake Dr SW, Lakewood, WA 98499. I hope she hears from others as well.
