New York's newest concert venue was announced this morning by Live Nation, and the outdoor, 5,250 capacity space promises a Manhattan concert experience like no other.
JBL Live at Pier 97, likely to be known simply as JBL to fans, will be an open air, general admission stage overlooking the Hudson River at 57th Street. Just like most other Manhattan venues such as The Gramercy Theater and Irving Plaza, JBL Live will be operated by Live Nation, ensuring that most national tours will be booked during its summer season.
Today's announcement offered an initial line up of bands like The Fray, 311, Theivery Corporation, The Soulshine Tour, and Robyn + Royksopp, with more to be announced. The Fray will inaugurate the venue on Wednesday, July 9. JBL also nicely complements Jones Beach and PNC, with about half of the capacity of those amphitheaters, filling a niche for smaller bands who still want to play outdoors.
The computer generated sketch of the venue is reminiscent of the stage at Governor's Island, a fantastic spot with skyline views, but a hassle to get to thanks to the need for a ferry ride. Expect JBL to quickly become a favorite venue for all music fans thanks to its relative ease of accessibility. VIP tickets will also be available for concerts, offering seats, private restrooms, and waiter service.
Tickets will be available through Ticketmaster and Livenation.com, and presales will be offered to Citibank cardholders.
