February will be here before we know it, ushering in Black History Month. It’s perfectly natural for jazz to play a prominent role in any such celebration and it is particularly good to note that Jazzschool in Berkeley has a special series of concerts on tap. Here’s the lowdown.
February 11: The Bill Bell Trio – Pianist and composer has worked with some giants of the genre, including Carmen McRae, Count Basie and Duke Ellington.
February 12: Eddie Marshall Tribute – Set for the Freight and Salvage, this concert showcases the veteran Bay Area drummer, with proceeds benefitting the Eddie Marshall Scholarship Fund. Featuring Peck Allmond (trumpet and saxophone), Kenny Brooks (tenor saxophone), Mark Levine (piano), John Wiitala (bass) and Akira Tana (drums).
February 18: Howard Wiley – The saxophonist-composer’s program will focus on his “Angola Project,” which spotlights the music of Angola State Prison. This lecture-performance draws on Wiley’s acclaimed “12 Gates to the City” (2010) album.
February 25: Rhonda Benin – The vocalist turns her attention to jazz’s leading African-American singers, including Dakota Staton, Carmen McRae, Shirley Horn, Betty Carter, Dinah Washington and Nancy Wilson.
