Jazz this weekend: Feb. 3 - 5

Although the Super Bowl is the big news everywhere this weekend, there are still plenty of other things to do before Super Sunday. Here are some jazz gigs around town that you might want to attend:

Fri., Feb. 3:

Downtown Bakersfield's First Friday celebration continues this month with music at various locations in the Arts District.

Metro Galleries will have jazz vocalist Kama Ruby from 5:30 - 9 PM. She'll be accompanied by Steve Merrick (piano) and Rick Taira (bass).

Ellie Jays (next door to Metro Galleries) will have Mike Montano (solo guitar/vocals) from 5:30 - 8 PM.

In the Northwest, King Tut will be featuring The Jimmy Narducci Group from 6 - 8:30 PM.

Imbibe will have Jim Robinson (vocals/guitar) from 6:30 - 9:30 PM.

Sat., Feb. 4:

The Pyrenees Cafe will have The Mike Montano Band (rock/latin jazz) Saturday afternoon from 1 - 5 PM.

Que Pasa at The Marketplace continues its Saturday Night Jazz program with Zanne Zarow (vocals) and Mike Raney (trumpet). They'll be playing from 9 PM to midnight.

Imbibe will have The Jimmy Narducci Group from 6:30 - 9:30 PM.

King Tut will feature Candace Freeman (vocals) and Chris Carton (guitar) from 6 - 8:30 PM.

Finally, the Kern City Town Hall/Civic Bldg will be the site of a special big band/dance event. If you like to dance to the sounds of the '40s, this might be for you. Admission is $10.

A dance class taught by Shari Fortino will be held from 6:15 - 7 PM, followed by Open Swing Dancing until 10 PM to the sounds of The Bakersfield Dance Orchestra, featuring Terry Cano (piano/vocals), Mike Smothers (drums/vocals), Paul Cierley (guitar), & Rick Lincoln (stand up bass).
