The San Diego Botanical Garden (SDBG) will be swinging with live jazz music Sunday Aug. 3. Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame Orchestra will be performing timeless classics from the likes of Glen Miller, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey and more.
Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame Orchestra (BBJHF) is a group of 17 skilled musicians paired with the vocals of two great singers. They originally started as a rehearsal band, but then branched out to include their foundation. BBJHF Foundation was founded in 1995, and is a 501-c3 nonprofit organization that devotes itself to spreading the love of big band and jazz music from the “Golden Age Era”. The BBJHF Foundation is dedicated to sponsoring music education and providing scholarships to talented and promising students in North County high school bands.
President of BBJHF David Larkin emphasized that the group of musicians are motivated by their love of music, “We’re educating and perpetuating an art form.”
The foundation gives away one scholarship a year that sends students to a weeklong jazz camp in Mammoth, where they are given the amazing chance to work directly with skilled jazz musicians.
“We go to the teachers and let them decide who is musically talented enough to perform with the musicians," says Larkin.
Attendees can spend the evening dancing in the garden. There will be CD’s available for purchase. The BBJHF Foundation will be donating all of their proceeds from tickets and CD sales along with any donations to further their mission of providing music education to North County schools.
The Summer Jazz Concert in the Garden takes place from 5 to 7 p.m. and tickets for SDBG members are $15 for adults and $25 for non-member adults and $5 for SDBG children members ages 3 to 12 and $10 for non-member children. Tickets can be purchased online or at the San Diego Botanical Garden’s gate.
