Jazz Party at Sea combines cruising with star-studded live music

Live music and cruises go hand in hand. But Jazz Party at Sea provides cruises for the jazz fan in mind.

The 12th annual private party is set to sail on board Norwegian Cruise Line’s M/S Norwegian Star from New Orleans November 4 and last for seven days, hitting ports of call as exotic as Costa Maya, Belize City, Roatan, and Cozumel. The jazz stars selected as entertainment for this Party at Sea come from all over and have earned many prominent accolades from Junos to Grammys.

The list so far includes the Renee Rosnes Quartet with Peter Washington, Lewis Nash and Steve Wilson, the Judy Carmichael Trio with Harry Allen and Chris Flory, Bill Charlap, Paulinho Garcia, Eric Alexander Quartet with Harold Mabern, Nat Reeves and Joe Farnsworth, Steve Turre, Stephen Porter, Michael Dease, Bruce Harris, Jovan Alexandre and Alioune Faye, Paul Wertico and Stu Katz.

Renee Rosnes is a premiere Canadian jazz pianist, composer, and CBC Jazz Profiles radio host who, like many of her colleagues, learned music classically before branching off into jazz. She also cut her teeth gigging in New York, amassing a favorable reputation amongst the greats there (think Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter, Buster Williams, James Moody, and Bobby Hutcherson). Her recordings attracted enough attention to earn four Junos. She’s able to translate the singular music of Monk, Shorter and Tyner, as well as create her own through commissioned works while in the all-star SFJAZZ Collective as piano chair, a 2004-2009 endeavor.

Before the ship even sets sail, the party kicks off in New Orleans proper for one, two or three nights for those interested in booking a pre-cruise jazz package. Cruise fares start at $1,239, based on double occupancy.

U.S. citizens can book reservations through Kristol H. Simpson, Lake Shore Travel/Jazz Club At Sea-manager of Jazz Programs, (800) 433-0493.
