Contemporary jazz / funk saxophonist/composer Darren Gholston returns to the Nile Theater this Friday, Feb. 5th, with another of his Jazz at the Nile events. Performing with Darren this week will be Miles Long, featuring Malcom-Jamaal Warner. This will be the first time that the entire Miles Long band has been to Bakersfield.
California native Gholston has performed with the likes of Ronnie Laws, Doc Powell, and Larry Dunn (Earth Wind and Fire) as well as Miles Long and has opened for artists such as Fattburger, Pieces of a Dream, Wayman Tisdale, Najee, and Al Jarreau.
His influences range from be bop to smooth jazz and funk, such as Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Grover Washington, Ronnie Laws, and George Howard.
The Miles Long band, featuring Malcom-Jamaal Warner, offers a unique blend of jazz and funk. Musical influences ranging from Miles Davis, Led Zeppelin, Stevie Wonder, and growing up with hip-hop music have helped groove the band's distinctive sound. Warner himself says on his website, "Urban Jazz/Funk has been the closest description, which is cool because we do approach you like jazz, but definitely hit you with the funk."
Warner has had offers from major labels to produce his music, but he has opted to go the independent route, in part to avoid the negative connations / biases assumed by many when dealing with a former acting "celebrity" such as himself. (He was Theo on The Cosby Show.)
Warner 's music speaks for itself now. And its jazzy and funky. This should be a great show.
The Nile Theater is located at 1721 19th St., Bakersfield, CA. Admission: $23.00
