Pianist/composer Vijay Iyer and poet Mike Ladd have joined forces to present “Holding It Down: The Veterans’ Dreams Project” at the Atlas Theater Friday at 8pm. According to the Atlas’s website, “this innovative concert sheds musical and poetic light on what it means for American soldiers of color to return home from war in Iraq and Afghanistan.” Those interested in attending this performance in hopes of hearing Iyer perform music from his critically acclaimed recordings, don't hold your breath. Instead, open your minds and prepare yourselves for a different Iyer experience. In addition to being a talented pianist, Iyer is a citizen of the world who’s anxiously waiting for the rest of us to wake up and join him.

WPAS presents Gretchen Parlato- Sixth & I Historic Synagogue (Saturday, March 9, 2013), show time: 8pm; tickets: $30
Vocalist Gretchen Parlato is a musician’s singer, but she came by it honestly. She comes from a family of artists—her father’s a bassist; her maternal grandfather was a recording engineer who recorded the Beatles, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong; her paternal grandfather was a singer—so she grew up understanding the relationship between voice and instrument and how they come together to form one sound on record. She’s been invited to appear on more than fifty recordings (including Terri Lyne Carrington’s 2011 Grammy Award winning Mosaic Project and Esperanza Spalding’s 2012 Grammy Award winning Radio Music Society), and has made three recordings under her own name. Protégé to jazz legends such as Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock, Parlato is not one to miss.
