Jazz around town
With women’s history month coming to a close and since we missed the awesomeness that is the Washington Women in Jazz Festival, I couldn’t let another day past in the month of March without acknowledging at least one show with a female headliner:
Somi- Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center at the University of Maryland, College Park (Friday, March 28, 2014); show times: 7pm & 9pm; tickets: sold out
The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center continues to host bold and exciting performances. Tomorrow night is no exception. East African singer/songwriter Somi will be celebrating the release of her newest recording, The Lagos Music Salon. This will be her first recording for Sony Music.
Celebrated for her elegant and earthy sound, Somi has performed with a great cast of jazz characters including Danilo Perez, Hugh Masakela, and Angelique Kidjo. Though both shows are sold out, Somi’s new recording will be available for release in April 2014.
For more information on Somi, look for @Somimusic on Facebook and Twitter.
Other exciting shows happening around town:
Jonathan Batiste- the Howard Theater (Saturday, March 29, 2014); show time: 8pm; tickets: $30
Jonathan Batiste and the Stay Human Orchestra is one of the more exciting shows in all of jazz. The New Orleans bred pianist connects with audiences in ways that few musicians (regardless of genre) have been able to do. If you’re looking for live music on Saturday night, check him out.

Benny Russell Quartet & Alexis Fleites Quartet- HR-57 (Friday & Saturday respectively, March 28 & 29, 2014); show time: 9pm; tickets: $15
If supporting local talent is more your speed, the Benny Russell Quartet and the Alexis Fleites Quartet will perform (separately) this weekend at HR-57. Show times run from 9pm-1am and doors open at 8pm. Contact HR-57 for additional details.
