Happy 2014! Though 2013 was filled with many interesting performances and some heartbreaking losses in the world of jazz, 2014 is full of promise.

Todd Marcus- Bohemian Caverns, tonight (Sunday, January 19, 2014); show times: 7pm & 8:30pm; tickets: $20

Bass clarinetist Todd Marcus will perform music with his jazz orchestra in tribute to the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. tonight (Sunday, January 19, 2014) at Bohemian Caverns.

The Baltimore-based jazz musician is a regular in the metro-DC and Baltimore areas and he’s also made quite a name for himself internationally. He was honored at the First World Bass Clarinet Convention in Rotterdam for his compositional talents. The Egyptian-American recently began exploring his heritage musically while also holding fast to the basic tenets of jazz music. In fact, NPR listed his 2012 recording titled Inheritance as one of the top-ten recordings of the year. Go and check him out!

Kenny Rittenhouse- Blues Alley, Wednesday, January 22, 2014); show times: 8pm & 10pm; tickets: $20

Another trumpeter will heat up the Blues Alley crowd this coming Wednesday (January 22, 2014). Metro-DC based Kenny Rittenhouse will perform with his quintet and vocalist Darden Purcell. In addition to his own bands, Rittenhouse performs regularly as part of the U.S. Army Blues Orchestra and the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra.

Afro Bop Alliance- Twins Jazz, Friday & Saturday, January 24-25, 2014; show times: 8pm & 10pm; tickets: $15

The Latin-Grammy Award winning Afro Bop Alliance will perform at Twins Jazz this coming weekend (Friday and Saturday, January 24-25, 2014). Celebrated for their hard-hitting grooves, the group is working on their latest recording due for a 2014 release.
