Puerto Rican featherweight prospect, Jayson Velez (21-0, 15 KOs) defeated a determined and crafty Dat Nguyen (17-3, 6 KOs) tonight at the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida. The bout was on the undercard of the Cotto-Rodriguez main event, presented by Top Rank, and televised on HBO World Championship Boxing.
The action began in round-1, both fighters trading punches and each trying to set the tone of the fight. It was a good fight for Velez, Nguyen really tested Velez in round-2, throwing a nice combination that rattled Velez. The glove of Velez touched the canvas, forcing a count which he would survive. This would be the wake up call for Velez.
Velez stayed patient and was effective landing some nice shots on Nguyen by the mid-rounds. Fighting with pure heart, Nguyen, who was born in Vietnam would attempt to answer every time Velez would throw a punch, but had little success and not landing as many punches as Velez.
A persistent and effective Velez poured it on in the later rounds, landing the more effective punches. Nguyen did not give up however, he did exchange with Velez and did land a few good shots of his own.
In the end, the judges scored the bout 98-91, 96-93 and 96-93 giving Velez the win by unanimous decision.
