Jaycee and Dicci : Trolls for LOLs

Just as every MMORPG has live chat channels that can be read and participated in by every player, each one of those channels has participants that aren’t in it for that channel’s expressed purpose. These players mainly aren’t interested in looking for groups or trading goods and services; they are only there for the lulz. We call these players “trolls.”

Your Lexington MMORPG Examiner recently sat down with a couple of these players to find out what makes them do what they do.

Jaycee is a priest on the Grizzly Hills realm of World of Warcraft.  Arguably the most famous troll on the server, he is the self-proclaimed "King of trade chat," and he spends most of his time standing over a well in one of the major cities.  Unlike most other trolls, he also uses the channel for its intended purpose, and can be found at most any time plying his many trades and refusing to ignore his many fans and detractors.

Dicci (pronounced D.C.) is a paladin on the same realm and is also one of the most active and visible trolls there.  Her avowed purpose is to keep the global trade channel from being used for trade.  Her catchphrase, "Girls don't play WoW," has been said so often that it has become as meaningless to the rest of the players as it was to her the very first time she said it.

Lexington MMORPG Examiner: So, why do you do it?

Jaycee: I honestly do it because I hate stupid people. They really make me mad and in my (real life) profession stupid people get you shot, it's not one of those places where unintelligence can be tolerated so I don't have much patience for it in game either.  I spend all day on my well because I honestly have nothing better to do.  i don't feel like raiding or doing battlegrounds.  Being social is more what I'm here for.

Dicci:  I do it for my own entertainment.  Something to lighten up my day and perhaps get a few laughs from other people.

LME:  Would you say there's an element of performance about trolling?

Dicci:  The internet gives everyone a chance to be someone they're not.  And in that sense I can say that it is definitely a performance.

Jaycee:  For me personally there is and that's only because I have reached realm celebrity status; therefore I try to make things a little more jazzy when and if I troll.

LME: What is the best way to tick somebody off?

Jaycee: lmao awesome question

LME: Thanks!

Dicci:  The best way to tick someone off is to choose a controversial topic and never give up on it (e.g. Girls don't play WoW). Been trolling that for two years and people STILL rage over it.

Jaycee: Dog them after the initial issue is over, an hour later bring it up again when you see them, or my personal favorite, take it to the WoW forums.

LME: UR MOM

Jaycee: My mom oh my mom?  Yeah she's great.

All gamers have the same ultimate goal; to have a good time playing. Whether they choose to do it by rescuing princesses or doing global chat standup just depends on what kind of player they are. In the world of trolling, if you have any of these guys on your ignore list, they have defeated you.
