Jay-Z to compose 'The Great Gatsby' score

Hip-Hop/Rap great Jay-Z is shifting his focus from dropping beats with Kanye West to working in Hollywood.

Since the debut of its trailer, “The Great Gatsby” has had the internet ablaze with its use of “Church in the Wild” (from Jay-Z and Kanye West) and Jack White’s cover of U2’s “Love is Blindness.”

The newest trailer even features music from Florence + the Machine (“Bedroom Hymns”), and Filter’s (awesome) cover of “Happy Together.”

The juxtaposition of having some modern songs with the films’ setting was throwing people off, but if we remember correctly director Baz Luhrmann (“Australia”) has done this for a number of his films, and to great effect (Radiohead in “Romeo + Juliet”).

So it should come as no surprise that The Film Stage learned yesterday that Jay-Z has been hired to compose the film’s score, and he is working with Jeymes Samuel of The Bullitts to accomplish it.

Jeymes posted to his Twitter, “Jay-Z and myself have been working tirelessly on the score for the upcoming #CLASSIC The Great Gatsby! It is too DOPE for words!”

This music, I think, really fits the trailer as a way to draw interest, but only time will tell if it fits the entire film.
