News of rapper Jay Z embracing what he refers to as an "Empire State of Mind," is no longer just a song for him, as EUR reports on Wednesday September 25, that the music and fashion mogul has teamed up with the very popular department store, Barney's New York to curate their 2013 Christmas themed campaign.
Jay Z, the former owner and co-founder of the urban fashion line, "Rocawear," has taken on the responsibility of bringing Christmas to Barney's through a project called "A New York Holiday;" which Fashion Telegraph describes as, "shop-in-shops titled BNY SCC Gallery (which stands for Barneys New York, Shawn Corey Carter) [that] will pop up in the luxury store's outposts in Manhattan, Beverly Hills, San Francisco, Boston and Chicago."
"A New York Holiday" is set to include limited-edition products by designers such as Lanvin, Balenciaga, Balmain, Rick Owens and Proenza Schouler. All of the designers have worked with Jay Z (Shawn Carter) directly on the collection that includes high-end pieces like leather backpacks, alligator-strap watches, cashmere blankets and t-shirts. The price for the collection will range from $70 to $33,900; with twenty five percent of sales goin to Jay’s "Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation."
Although, Jay Z is definitely among the greats of hip hop and business, he is not Barney's first choice in bringing the vision of music and fashion together for a creative Christmas collection. In 2011, Barneys partnered with Pop music icon, Lady Gaga to transform its store for the holidays.
Huntington Post describes the project, called "Gaga's Workshop," as "Gaga's version of Santa's workshop, complete with limited edition trinkets, Gaga-curated books and music and rock candy jewelry all developed by Gaga and go-to designer, Nicola Formachetti."
As for Jay Z's project, Barney's shoppers, fashion fans and those who are just curious to see what the end will bring will have to wait until November as Barney's will release the collection online and in store windows on November 20th.
One can only wonder if Jay Z will be listening to his own song "Empire State of Mind" for a bit of inspiration. Watch the video.
