Jay Leno's monologue last night featured some of the funniest material I've seen him perform in a long time. Jay candidly addressed the rumors that his show may be canceled (Read: WILL be canceled) and got big laughs in the process.
It seems like only a few months ago that I was writing about the debut of the new "Jay Leno Show." Oh wait, it was only a few months ago.
In last night's monologue Jay commented to musical director Kevin Eubanks that if they were canceled by NBC they could do some traveling. "I hear Fox is beautiful this time of the year," Leno quipped.
NBC's plan was to put Leno in the 10 p.m. prime-time slot which would greatly reduce their production costs allowing for lesser ratings while bringing in reasonable profits from advertisers. The problem seems to be that NBC affiliate stations are threatening to abandon ship because the viewership is so low that they don't get any substantial lead-in to their 11 o'clock local news broadcasts. The 11 o'clock news is the biggest advertising revenue generator for most local stations.
So, will Jay jump ship and go to another network? Will Conan O'Brien go back to the 12:30 slot and make way for Jay to return to 11:30? Will Jimmy Fallon take a buy out and mercifully go back to being a nice guy with occasional movie roles. Maybe NBC can create a sitcom based on his life and stand-up comedy.
