On Wednesday, April 3, Jay Leno confirmed that his is in fact leaving The Tonight Show. The longtime host also confirmed that Jimmy Fallon will be his replacement.
In a statement, Leno said, “Congratulations Jimmy. I hope you’re as luck as me and hold on to the job until you’re the old guy. If you need me, I’ll be at the garage.”
Fallon issued his own statement. “I’m really excited to host a show that starts today instead of tomorrow.”
NBC stated that, “As part of the transition, The Tonight Show will be returning to its original home in 30 Rock in New York” from Leno’s home base of Los Angeles.
Jay Leno, 62, will end his reign after 22 years as the host of The Tonight Show in the spring of 2014. Jimmy Fallon, 38, will officially take over as his replacement.
Chief Executive Officer of NBC Universal, Steve Burke called Jay Leno an “entertainment icon.” He went on to say that, “We are purposefully making this change when Jay is #1, just as Jay replaced Johnny Carson when he was #1. Jimmy Fallon is a unique talent and this is him time.”
