Jasper Schuringa helped to take down alleged terrorist Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab on Northwest flight to Detroit on Friday.
Jasper Schuringa is a video director and producer from Amsterdam, and was aboard the flight from Amsterdam to Detroit, Michigan on Friday. Schuringa said he is just happy to be alive after the suspected terrorist attempted to blow up the plane with a small device, originally thought to be a firecracker.
Abdulmutallab, 23, is a suspected terrorist who lighted a small explosive device on a flight that was about to land in Detroit.
Schuringa said he heard the firecracker sound and then someone yelled, “Fire! Fire!” And when he saw the smoke, he knew something was wrong.
Abdulmutallab's was holding a burning object between his legs, and was staring blankly ahead.
"I pulled the object from him and tried to extinguish the fire with my hands and threw it away," Schuringa said. Schuringa yelled for water and drug Abdulmutallab to the front of the plane. Schuringa took off Abdulmutallab’s clothes to make sure he didn’t have any other devices on him, and then handcuffed the alleged terrorist. Passengers applauded him when he returned to his seat.
"My hands are pretty burned. I am fine," he said. "I am shaken up. I am happy to be here."
The incident is currently being investigated, and Abdulmutallab is freely speaking to authorities.
