Jasper National Park is known for breathtaking scenery resulting from its unique combination of glaciology and geology. The area known as the Columbia Icefield, complete with moving glaciers and over 20 feet of snow a year, measures over 130 square miles and is estimated at over 1200 feet in depth in some spots. Now visitors to Jasper have a new way to enjoy this World Heritage Site, via the Glacier Skywalk, a glass floored observation platform posed over 900 feet above the Sunwapta Valley floor.

Open daily from May 1 to mid-October, the Glacier Skywalk gives visitors the chance to view ice-capped mountain peaks, glacier-formed valleys, and the myriad of wildlife and geography in between. The experience begins with a coach ride to Discovery Trail, a cliff-edge walkway along the Sunwapta Valley. Guides recommend savoring moments along the trail, experiencing a cross-section of life shaped by centuries of ice, snow, wind and sun.

Budding geologists can enjoy the rock striations demonstrating the power of glacial force while engineers can marvel at the technology behind the Skywalk’s construction. There’s even a hanging garden built into a rock wall, showcasing the plant species hardy enough to survive this intense environment. Sunwapta Valley is one of the few places in the world with a triple continental divide, as water from the Columbia Icefield flows to the Artic, Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

The final experience is the Glacier Skywalk, jutting out from the side of the cliff far above the valley floor. Standing on a glass floored walkway may take some getting used to, but the vision is worth the trouble, as it alone provides views available nowhere else on earth. Eco-friendly and well-engineered, the Skywalk offers a bird’s eye glimpse of the vastness and majesty of nature. Be prepared to be awed.

The Glacier Skywalk is the latest effort of Brewster Travel Canada, a collection of businesses focused on a premier travel experience in Canada. This organization also operates the Banff Gondola, Glacier Adventure, Banff Lake Cruises and Explore Rockies tours.

The cost of the Glacier Skywalk is $24.95 for adults, $12.50 for children up to 16, and kids under 6 are free. Discount packages combining the Skywalk with other Brewster attractions are also available.
