On Friday, Jason Mraz paid a visit to his former elementary school just outside of Richmond, Virginia, chatting with students and entertaining them with a few songs. Mraz was inspired to return to Mechanicsville Elementary School after several students wrote letters to him asking him for a personal visit.

Mraz, who started performing at the age of six, attended Mechanicsville Elementary during first and second grade. Not only did Mraz star as Santa Claus in a holiday play at the school, but while attending the school, Mraz discovered his love of hats.
When Jason was seven, his stepfather, "Doodie" Tomes gave him a Greek fisherman's hat. Jason was so taken with the hat that he begged for permission to wear the hat during his official second grade school photo, which began his lifelong affinity for hats.
During his school visit, Mraz reconnected with former elementary school music teacher, Abby Baird.
"He always had a sparkle, a light, something that set him apart," Baird told the Richmond Times-Dispatch. "He had tons of confidence and such a uniqueness. I've been very proud of him because not only is he a singer, but also a songwriter."
Mraz said this experience as well as a recent visit to Brazil, and his trip to Ghana which he left for on Saturday, are all part of a "writing and research" tour for his upcoming fourth studio album.
