Jason Mraz appeared on ABC's Nightline on July 17, 2009 in the "music playlist" segment. Mraz revealed that his favorite musical tastes range from Maria Callas singing opera to hip hop/R&B group, P.M. Dawn.
Mraz, who was born in 1977, recalls his earliest musical memory as hearing "Eye in the Sky" by the Alan Parsons Project which was released in 1982.
In 1990, at age 13, Jason gets his first gig singing in a local R&B band. This seems to influence the next pick on Jason's playlist, "Set Adrift on Memory Bliss" by P.M. Dawn, with Mraz explaining "I probably lost my virginity to that song."
At age 18, Mraz learns guitar after seeing the Dave Matthews Band perform. Mraz admits he is still a huge fan of Dave Matthews and was inspired especially by Matthew's early songs like "Seek Up."
Describing the next song on his playlist, "Hide and Seek" by Imogen Heap, Mraz explains: "Every time I hear it, it lights a fire in me. It makes me stoked to be a singer and it makes me really excited to work on my next thing."
As for anyone listening to the Maria Callas performance of "O Mio Babbino Caro", Mraz says, "You will weep. It needs to be on while you're cooking, it needs to be on while you're loving, it needs to be on any moment where you really want to enhance your life romantically."
