Jason Mraz makes list of top 'Farmers under 40'

Atlantic Records

In 2004, Jason Mraz purchased a house in northern San Diego county. At the time, he was looking for a place to work on his next album, Mr. A-Z. The house was in a secluded area and had lots of space where he could build a home studio. And it just happened to be located on an avocado farm.

Being the environmentally friendly guy that he is, Mraz was happy to take on the responsibility of harvesting avocados and named his farm, "Mraz Farms."

In a recent interview with the Baltimore Sun, Mraz explained:

"Where I wanted to move, it just so happened that all the trees in the mountain and valley were avocados. So I moved in and just took it on. I let them keep growing. I let the growers and farmers march through the area and pick them and sell them and share them.

It's a really cool thing to be a part of -- to invest in a piece of the earth that actually gives back and provides for families -- those who pick the avocados -- and then provides nourishment for those who eat 'em. It's pretty awesome."

Mraz, who started eating a raw foods diet back in 2008, says he eats two to four avocados a day. He likes to get creative with his avocado creations and has created a recipe for chocolate mousse made with avocados, a.k.a., Chocomole.

The Mother Nature Network has recently compiled a list of "40 Farmers Under 40" with Mraz headlining the list. The spotlight on Mraz and his link to farming is highlighted by the fact that this is the first year that Jason will be playing at Farm Aid, the long-running annual concert that benefits the nation's farmers. In 1985, Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp organized the first Farm Aid concert. This year's Farm Aid concert takes place on October 4 in St. Louis at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater.
