Jason Cutshall was raised in Eden Prairie Minnesota. Jason attended Bethel College where he trained in ceramics under Kirk R. Freeman, MFA and graduated with a BA and Mdv. Professor Freeman instructed students to produce excellent work with the promise that on merit potter artists will gain a reputation.
When I look at a spectrum of Jason Cutshall pottery, his style emerges with distinction. He is unafraid to try different glazes and techniques. He is bold in applying design that expands traditional foundations. One thing that jumps at me is his introduction of marks – round and stripe, created on pieces, bowls and plates, mugs and such that provide the basis for a brand of design.
These marks are evident though subtle as they are integrated into the overall piece.
His work is a sturdy type of pottery, yet made to feel free with contrasting and varied use of glazes.
His experimentation achieves one of his aims and that is to give his work a sense of movement.
Jason works at home and at the Lee Arts Center studio where he does his firing.
Like many of his fellow potters, he wants his work to be functional and used. He enjoys the Arlington Lee Arts Center culture. He seeks assignments to produce commissioned work designed for specific spaces.
Implicit Artist Statement
“I spend a great deal of time experimenting with glazes. My favorite glazes are ones that create a sense of motion on the pot. This has drawn me to ash glazes and recently to crackle glazes. I was trained in Minnesota under Kirk Freeman and have a great appreciation for the extensive pottery culture that exists along the St. Croix River Valley.”
His favorite materials include: wheel-thrown porcelain and stoneware.
