Jason Butcher suffered the first loss of his professional career by unanimous decision in the semifinals of the Bellator middleweight tournament.

The Cincinnati native took on Mikkel Parlo on Friday night on the main card at Bellator 102 in Visalia, Calif. The fight aired live on Spike TV.

Parlo consistently defended off Butcher’s attempts to take the fight to the ground and out struck him over the course of three rounds. The judges would score the fight 29-28, 29-28 and 30-27 in favor of Parlo.

Butcher came into the fight coming off the second knockout win of his career but he was unable to sustain any success on the feet against the Dane. The 28-year-old tried to turn the fight into a grappling match by dropping to his back throughout the fight but Parlo would not take the bate.

On two of the judges' scorecards, Butcher was able to win the first round with a brief takedown and some success on his feet toward the end of the round. Butcher began to slow as the fight went on and Parlo turned up the pressure and took the final two rounds on all three of the judges' scorecards.

With the win, Parlo will advance on to the finals of the tournament and face Brennan Ward for a shot at the Bellator middleweight title.
