Apr 25, 2011 - Jason Alexander, best known as George Constanza on the TV show Seinfeld, is now the star of The Prisoner of Second Avenue, directed by Glenn Cassale and playing at El Portal Theatre until May 15.
Along with Gina Hecht, Alexander portrays the escalating problems of a middle-aged couple living in the Upper East Side of New York City, having to cope with unemployment, and with the noise and dangers of the city. Although set in 1971 the issues that the pair must survive feel absolutely relevant today. The playwright, Neil Simon, infused much humor into his work, making The Prisoner of Second Avenue stand on a fine line between comedy and drama. Supported by Annie Korzen, Ron Orbach, DeeDee Rescher, and Carol Ita White, Alexander and Hecht successfully translate the author’s wit making the four-act play an enjoyable experience.
The Prisoner of Second Avenue opened Saturday evening to a full house sprinkled with Hollywood stars. It will continue Wednesdays at 2 pm and 8 pm, Thursdays and Fridays at 8 pm, Saturdays at 2 pm and 8 pm, and Sundays at 2 pm and 7 pm. Tickets are $45 and $55, with a limited amount of VIP tickets at $75 that include a meet-and-greet with Alexander, an autographed photo, and a two-drink voucher for the intermission.
