Jared Remy, the son of renowned Boston Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy, was indicted by a Massachusetts grand jury for murder on Sept. 24, 2013, in connection with the death of his girlfriend, Jennifer Martel, according to Fox Sports.
Authorities accused Jared Remy, 34, of stabbing Jennifer a number of times on Aug. 15 at an apartment complex.
Jennifer, 27, was reportedly attacked in several rooms of their Waltham apartment before Remy threw her to the ground on their patio, according to the New York Daily News.
CBS News reports that as neighbors attempted to assist Jennifer, Remy allegedly swung the knife at them to keep them at bay.
He was arrested covered in Jennifer’s blood and has pleaded not guilty to the crime.
Middlesex Assistant District Attorney Lisa McGovern said, “Great force and great effort was made by this defendant in stabbing Miss Martel over and over and over again,” according to the Daily News.
According to the report, Remy’s alleged attack took place just a day after he was released from police custody for assaulting Jennifer on Aug. 13.
Following the arrest, Jerry Remy announced he would not call any more games this season and was grieving for Jennifer’s family, reports Fox.
The Daily News notes Jared Remy dated Jennifer for seven years and the two had been engaged since 2009. The couple reportedly have a 4-year-old daughter who was inside the apartment at the time of the incident. She is in the custody of officials, the report indicates.
