Jared Remy has been arrested and charged with murder. The son of former baseball player and current Red Sox announcer Jerry "Remdawg" Remy was taken into custody on Aug. 15 after he allegedly attacked his girlfriend Jennifer Martel and stabbed her to death. Jared and Jennifer had been dating for 7 years and the couple's 4-year-old daughter was home at the time of the attack according to The Boston Globe. The child was unharmed.
"The prosecutor said that when Waltham police arrived after getting numerous 911 calls, Remy held his hands over his head and surrendered without incident to the officers," The Boston Globe reports. He was reportedly covered in blood when he was taken into custody.
Jared Remy was actually arrested on Tuesday after pushing his girlfriend into a mirror. He was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon charge but then allowed to go home on personal recognizance the next day. His girlfriend refused to get a restraining order against him. One day later, he murdered Jennifer, stabbing her to death on the patio of their home.
"I've been in contact with the Remys. They are devastated. This is a very sad and tragic day for two families," said Remy’s defense attorney, Peter Bella. It is unknown if Jared was physically abusive or violent before this week.
Jared Remy, 34, entered a "not guilty" plea in court on Friday. He was charged with murder and domestic assault and battery. He was held without bail. His daughter is currently in the custody of the Department of Children and Families.
