The 29th Annual Film Independent Spirit Awards took place on March 1, 2014, at the beach in Santa Monica, Calif. Here is what this Spirit Award winner said backstage in the Spirit Awards press room.

JARED LETO

Best Supporting Male

(“Dallas Buyers Club”)

What do you think about the civil unrest going on in Venezuela?

Obviously, I’ve been following on Twitter today the situation in Venezuela. Obviously, I’m sending good thoughts to the good people there who are fighting for what they believe in. Venezuela is in my heart. It’s a very challenging situation, I’m sure, for the people that are there right now, but I wish them everything that they dream of.

What can you say about “Dallas Buyers Club” director Jean-Marc Vallée?

Jean-Marc is great, as you know … He’s wonderful. He’s a great director. I think he’s just beginning. I think he’s really going to share with us some incredible film in the next period of time.

What happened to you internally when you looked in the mirror for the first time as your Rayon character in “Dallas Buyers Club”?

What happened internally when I looked in the mirror? Well, I stopped being me, I suppose, and I saw this beautiful person: Rayon. That’s what you want to have happen, I suppose.

But acting is a little bit like sculpting. You work sometimes from the outside in, sometimes from the inside out. You build a structure, and you dive deep, and hope you can explore or are able to share a piece of truth with the world.

When you first read the “Dallas Buyers Club” script, did you have any idea that you and the movie would be getting so much acclaim?

I had no idea that the script would turn into such a special film. I had hoped. I thought the script and the role were wonderful, and you never know. I’ve made a career out of making independent cinema, right? I’ve mostly made art-house, independent films. And they can break your heart, because they don’t always turn out the way that you hoped they would.

The odds are always against you. They’re impossible to get financed. They’re impossible to get distribution, impossible to market. Impossible, impossible, impossible. So when they do work and they connect with people, it’s really a wonderful and beautiful thing that happens.

What advice would you give your 17-year-old self?

God, the things that I could say! I would say nothing, because you have to learn your own mistakes, and I wouldn’t want to change anything, because I’m feeling really grateful about the way things are.

What’s the best part of working with Matthew McConaughey?

The best part about Matthew is he, like I, came to challenge himself and do something special, something different. We met on equal ground. And I think both of us are probably grateful to each other for pushing as hard as we did. I know I’m grateful to him.
