Japanese take a bite out of beauty with snaggletooth smiles

Obtaining the “perfect smile” means different things to different people. While people here in the US regularly shell out several thousand dollars to have their teeth “well-aligned, perfectly white teeth with beautiful digital contours, noted Dr. Mark Yanosky, an orthodontist in Birmingham, Al, snaggleteeth have become the standard of beauty among Japanese women. In fact, many “beauty conscious” women there are reportedly shelling out around $400 to have their teeth misaligned in order to emulate the girl pop group TYB48 or “Tseyke-Yaeba" 48,” which first introduced the “child-like vampire mouth” and turned it into “ all the rage” after dropping their debut Album “Mind If I Bite, in 2011, according to Japan Today.

"A lot of my patients are fashion-conscious and very cute. I wanted to find some way to take advantage of this, so I formed TYB48," announced Taro Masuoka, of Tokyo’s Pure Cure Dental Salon, who pioneered the procedure that involves cementing exaggerated veneers onto each canine tooth.

Although the procedure can be done so it is temporary, Dr. Joseph Banker, a cosmetic dentist from Westfield, NJ warns that “the additional length may cause stress on the underlying teeth and can increase the risk of a tooth fracture, as well as lead to jaw problems, tooth decay and bacteria build-up.”
