This brutal assault occurred at an event for fans in northeastern Japan. Along with two members of the all-female Japanese pop group AKB48 one staffer was also injured by a saw-wielding man at the fan event. In a statement released by Japanese media posted on the group's official blog it was stated that 18-year-old Anna Iriyama and 19-year-old Rina Kawaei were cut on their hands and head and a male staff member was cut on the hand.

The injured performers and staff member were taken to a hospital late on Sunday afternoon to be treated. The police charged a 24-year-old unemployed man with the attack and arrested him. This incident took place in Takizawa city in northeastern Japan. AKB48 is a very popular song and dance troupe which has inspired sister groups across Japan and in Indonesia, China and Taiwan. There is a rotating cast of more than 90 young women who are known in Japan as "idols."

It was not immediately known why the man attacked the Japanese pop group or whether the two dancers were specifically targeted by him reports The Japan Times. The suspect was arrested and is being investigated for suspicion of attempted murder. He has been identified as Satoru Umeta, 24, from Towada in neighboring Aomori. This was a repulsive incident and highlights the need to be a great deal more vigilante about spectators being allowed to carry any types of weapons to such events. Fans worldwide are now sharing in prayers for the well being of the AKB48 group.
