News of ongoing animal rescue efforts in Japan remains sketchy. While there are limited videos and pictures of some surviving pets, it’s hard to get an accurate count from the various rescue groups in the area. The latest news on Japan’s famous Cat Island, an island of around 100 elderly people and many, many cats, is promising. According to a Facebook post Monday by Japan Earthquake Animal Rescue and Support, the island survived but is short on food.
“Just to give everyone an update on Tashirojima, the cat island. The people and cats are safe but short of food. A volunteer looked into transporting food by boat, but the is too much debris in the water. A helicopter is the only way. The army will probably get a helicopter ready soon so we are looking into the possibility of asking them to take cat food too.”
Japan Earthquake Animal Rescue and Support keeps an active Facebook page with posts every few hours of their journey in the tsunami ravaged areas of Japan. According to their posts, they left for Iwate earlier today. They also report that tomorrow World Vets will be heading into the disaster area for a couple of days. Fuel remains a problem for rescuers trying to help. It is unclear how many animals have been rescued or where they are recovering. Money and resources will be used strictly for rescue, care and support of animals in crisis due to the earthquake and tsunami.
