January thaw in the forecast

Are you read for a dose of mild weather? It is kind of hard to believe many people would not be! After experiencing some of the coldest wind chill temperatures in 20 years, it is time for a break in the cold.

Winter is hanging on to one last grip this evening. Some light snow is spreading in as a weak disturbance moves through the region. This snow will accumulate between 0.5 and 1.5 inches across the area before tapering off after midnight. Temperatures will hover around freezing and even warm a degree or two by morning. This will limit accumulations on pavement and even change the snow over to rain by the early morning hours. A very brief period of patchy sleet or freezing rain will be possible after midnight, so watch out for an icy patch or two on the roads overnight.

Friday will be a dreary but mild day. Expect clouds to hang tough for the majority of the day and patchy drizzle to stay with us. It will be a very moist feeling day as the remainder of any fresh snow from Thursday night is melted by the warming temperatures that will head into the middle 40s.

A cold front will push through Ohio late Friday night and early Saturday morning. A broad area of rainfall is expected with this front so take the umbrella with you for any early plans Saturday. The rain will taper off after noon and temperatures will begin to fall from the upper 40s into the 30s by the early evening hours.

Sunday will be a quiet weather day under high pressure with partly cloudy skies and highs in the lower to middle 40s.

The colder weather will return by the middle of next week. Some rain and snow may accompany a weather system late Monday into Tuesday which will pull down the colder air and produce more snow showers for Wednesday.
