Over most of this year, the promos at Friday Night Magic events have been versions of cards associated with one of the ten Return to Ravnica-block guilds, one card for each. When all of the cards through December were known, only one guild remained promoless: The one that spills over into January of next year, the Boros Legion. And the Boros got quite a card as their reward for waiting so long for an FNM promo - according to Trick Jarrett's magicthegathering.com Arcana article today, January's card will be Warleader's Helix.
When it was first spoiled, Warleader's Helix was considered to be something of an inferior variant on Lightning Helix, lacking the latter's raw efficiency, but has gained more respect as Dragon's Maze has been played in Standard. The art of the FNM version is a definite improvement over the original - the iconic form of the bolts themselves have of course been kept intact, if made more loose and naturalistic (Helix is right there in the name) but the fully-armored Angel looks crisper and more dynamic than the awkwardly-posed Aurelia from the original version, and the buildings in the background look very nice. All in all there's a very apropos sense of power and grace, with an impressive-looking and non-objectified female figure handing out pain to the unrighteous. The art has had positive reception, with MTGSalvation.com user Barinellos commenting that it made him want to play a Ravnica-themed Defense of the Ancients-esque game.
What do you think of the new Warleader's Helix art? Planning on playing FNM in January to get your hands on one? Let me know in the comments.
