From Pete Travis, the director of Vantage Point, comes the post-apocalyptic thriller Dredd adapted from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra’s legendary comic book. It stars Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby and Lena Headey.
Set in future America, it is an irradiated wasteland where Mega City One, spanning from Boston to Washington, D.C., is a dangerous metropolis overrun by criminals. The law of the land are urban cops called “Judges” who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner. The ultimate Judge is Dredd who is known and feared throughout the city.
During a routine day, Dredd is tasked by the Chief Judge to train and evaluate new recruit Cassandra Anderson, a powerful psychic who failed the aptitude tests. Their day’s mission to investigate a heinous crime sends them to the 200-story vertical slum controlled by prostitute turned sadistic drug lord Ma-Ma and her vicious crew. Ma-Ma is taking over the city by dealing a powerful drug called “Slo-Mo,” that has users experiencing reality at a fraction of its normal speed. When they capture one of Ma-Ma’s men, she puts the building on lockdown and wages a dirty, massive war to annihilate the Judges and protect her empire. Dedicated the justice, the Judges refuse to back down and engage in a relentless battle to shut her down and sentence her to death.
