To Kill a Mockingbird was first theatrically released in 1962. It tells the story of the principled Alabama lawyer Atticus Finch who defends a black man against unfounded rape charges. Subsequently, he and his children, Jean Louise "Scout" Finch and Jem, are vilified by the local townspeople. One night his children are attacked by the real assailant, but fortunately saved by the town bogeyman, Arthur "Boo" Radley (Robert Duvall’s big screen debut). Filmed in black and white, it was critically acclaimed for the actors’ splendid performances, especially Gregory Peck in his iconic role. The well-crafted narrative boldly endorsed racial tolerance, fairness and honor. It earned eight Academy Award nominations and three wins including a Best Actor for Gregory Peck, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Art Direction. The prestigious American Film Institute lists To Kill a Mockingbird as one of the 100 Greatest American Films and also names Atticus Finch as the greatest movie hero of the 20th century. This timeless classic remains as powerful today as it was at its release.
