January 30th cinema event takes audiences behind NY theater world curtain

On January 30, 2013, NCM Fathom Events, Overnight Musicals, and The Broadway League will present “One Night Stand: Creating a Play in a Day.” The event will be broadcast to nearly 450 movie theaters nationwide at 7:30 p.m. local time.

The film follows some of New York’s top actors including Cheyenne Jackson (30 Rock), Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family), and Rachel Dratch (Saturday Night Live) as they work to put together a musical in 24 hours. The hitch here is that they are only given 24 hours to write, cast, compose, rehearse, and perform four short musicals. At the end of the 24 hours, the shows have their opening and closing at New York City’s Gramercy Theatre. What happens during this time is something theater goers will enjoy watching as well as seeing exclusive behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with the stars of “One Night Stand” who share their own stories of life on Broadway.

This 24 hours show creation was organized by The 24 Hour Company to benefit the nonprofit theater company, The Exchange. In a press release, details were described about how The 24 Hour Company's "The 24 Hour Plays" is an institution in New York and international theater, but its work is always fresh and new. Creator Tina Fallon intended the original "The 24 Hour Plays," which were inspired by Scott McCloud's 24 Hour Comics, to be a one-time-only event when they debuted on Manhattan's Lower East Side in 1995. However, eighteen years and hundreds of plays and musicals later, The 24 Hour Company produces "The 24 Hour Plays" and "The 24 Hour Musicals" on Broadway and in cities all over the world, including London, Los Angeles, Chicago, Florence, Dublin, and Athens. Theater and film icons such as Billy Crudup, Jennifer Aniston, Rosie Perez, Liev Schreiber, Cynthia Nixon, Brooke Shields, Rachel Dratch, Tina Howe, Terrance McNally, and Teresa Rebeck regularly participate alongside newcomers in what insiders call "the 2-4."

Tickets for “One Night Stand: Creating a Play in a Day” are available at participating theater box offices and online at www.FathomEvents.com. Some of the participating theaters in this area include Clifton Commons and Showplace 14 in Secaucus.
