Batman: The Dark Knight Returns - Part 2 is the final installment of the fifteenth direct-to-video animated film in the DC Universe Animated Original Movies line released by Warner Premiere and Warner Bros. Animation. It contains the epic conclusion in the two-part adaptation of Frank Miller’s acclaimed 1980s four-issue comic book limited series Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. The film is directed by Jay Oliva from a screenplay by Bob Goodman. Sam Register, Bruce Timm, Michael Uslan and Benjamin Melnicker are the executive producers. Fanboy demi-god Peter Weller of Robocop fame reprises his role as the voice of Bruce Wayne/Batman. Joining Weller is David Selby as Commissioner Gordon, Ariel Winter as Carrie/Robin, Mark Valley as Clark Kent/Superman, Michael Emerson as Joker, Conan O’Brien as animated talk show host Dave Endochrine and Michael McKean as Dr. Bartholomew Wolper. Also featured in the voice cast is Paget Brewster as Lana Lang, Maria Canals-Barrrera as new Commissioner Yindel and Radio Hall of Fame member Michael Jackson as Alfred.
Following the events in Batman: The Dark Knight Returns - Part 1, Batman and his new sidekick Robin have reclaimed Gotham City from The Mutants, who had terrorized the citizens. Continuing to battle crime, Batman’s resurgence has put him in the spotlight once again -- awakening an evil in Arkham Asylum. Arch nemesis Joker is back and he has a new diabolical scheme that threatens to drag Batman into the darkest levels of insanity. Meanwhile, Superman has been sent by the President to stop Batman’s new unsanctioned reign at whatever cost. The aging Dark Knight will now have to battle old foes and allies simultaneously while waging a tireless war against crime to protect his beloved city.
The DVD and Blu-ray include a preview of DC Universe's next animated movie Superman: Unbound. Exclusively on Blu-ray are three bonus episodes handpicked by producer Alan Burnett, a digital comic with an excerpt from the graphic novel The Dark Knight Falls by Frank Miller, a look at Batman: The Dark Knight Returns - Part 1 and three featurettes. “The Joker: Laughing in the Face of Death” is a fitting tribute to the Joker, giving perspective as to why this engrossing character is the true arch nemesis of Batman. The all-new documentary “Superman vs. Batman: When Heroes Collide” examines Batman and Superman’s long history of friendship and conflict. In “From Sketch to Screen – Exploring the Adaptation Process with Jay Oliva,” director Oliva gives a fascinating animatic breakdown of five of his favorite moments from Batman: The Dark Knight Returns.
