From the director of Good Will Hunting and Milk comes the romantic film Restless starring Henry Hopper (son of the late Dennis Hopper), Mia Wasikowska and Ryō Kase. It is the tender, yet quirky, coming-of-age love story of a young man and a beautiful dying girl. Enoch Brae is obsessed with death after his parents died in a car accident and his best friend is the board game-loving ghost of a WWII Japanese kamikaze pilot. He likes to crash funerals and it is there he meets the charming terminal cancer patient Annabel Cotton. She is full of life and even works with children who have cancer. The two connect and begin a doomed romantic relationship as they spend her final weeks making the most of each moment together. Through her, he learns to live again and through him, she meets fate gracefully.
Restless is so much more than just another film about death. Oscar-nominated Gus Van Sant takes the difficult subject and turns it into magical realism through his masterful direction and vivid imagery. He shows that death can inspire a celebration of life and love through the chemistry between Wasikowska and Hopper’s characters, Annabel and Enoch. To keep reality just outside the frame, Ryō Kase’s quirky ghost Hiroshi Takahashi injects a healthy dosage of lighthearted humor. Young actors Wasikowska and Hopper show much promise with their deft performance of their characters, while Danny Elfman delivers yet another beautiful score. Overall, Restless takes pain and turns it into grace, tenderness and love with just a dash of heartache so you will remember its message of life. “We have so little time to say the things we mean...What do you live for?”
