January 2014 enters books as Denver's eleventh snowiest January on record

As the month comes to a close, the overnight snow we saw last night into this morning has pushed January 2014 into Denver’s weather record books.

As reported by the National Weather Service, with 2.6 inches of snowfall recorded, the monthly total for the Mile High City climbed to 14.3 inches. That is just enough to claim the number 10 spot on the list of top 10 January snow measurements.

January 2014 will take the place of January 1991 when 14.1 inches fell. The snowiest January on recorded occurred in 1992 when 24.3 inches of snow fell.

Typically a relatively dry month, January is only Denver’s fourth snowiest month with an average of 7.0 inches.

Looking at the 2013 / 2014 snow season, January helped make up some lost ground from the previous dry months. The seasonal total now stands at 22.3 inches, 5.5 inches below the long term average of 27.8 inches we normally receive by the end of January.
