January 15, 2013 DVD and Blu-ray: 'The Possession' with Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Video)

From producers Sam Raimi, Robert Tapert and J. R. Young comes the supernatural horror film The Possession directed by Ole Bornedal and written by Juliet Snowden and Stiles White. Based on true events and inspired by The Exorcist, it stars Golden Globe winner Kyra Sedgwick, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Natasha Calis, Madison Davenport, Jay Brazeau, Matisyahu and Grant Show.

When recently divorced father Clyde Brenek invites his daughters Hannah and Em to see his new house, they stop off at a neighbor’s yard sale. His younger daughter Em becomes fascinated with an antique wooden box and asks her father to buy it. Afterward, father and daughter try to open the box and fail -- thinking it may not be meant to be opened. Em keeps the box in her bedroom and later that night hears whispers coming from the box. She tries opening it once more and is successful. Inside, she finds a tooth, the corpse of a moth and a ring -- which she starts wearing.

As time passes, Em becomes more obsessed with the box and begins to act erratic, becoming antisocial and turning violent at times. Concerned for Em’s well-being, Clyde and his ex-wife Stephanie soon realize that Em may be possessed. Clyde consults with a university professor to learn more about the box and discover that it is a dibbuk box that once contained a Jewish malicious spirit. From a visit to a Hasidic community in Brooklyn, he learns from a Jew named Tzadok that the murderous spirit is named Abizu -- meaning “taker of children.” When Em opened it, the spirit latched onto her. The only way to stop the spirit from devouring its human host is to perform an exorcism and trap the spirit back in the box before it is too late.

The DVD and Blu-ray include an extensive featurette focusing on the eerie true story behind The Possession, along with separate audio commentaries with Bornedal and the film's writers.
