There is something to celebrate almost every day.

January 10 is Bittersweet Chocolate Day.

What is bittersweet chocolate and how is it different from other chocolate?

Chocolate is a range of products derived from cocoa, mixed with cocoa butter and finely powdered sugar to produce a solid confection.

There are several types of chocolate according to the proportion of cocoa used in a particular formulation.

"Bittersweet chocolate" is a sweetened form of dark chocolate made with cocoa liquor, sugar, cocoa butter, and vanilla. Unlike milk chocolate or white chocolate, it does not contain any milk solids.

According to FDA standards, bittersweet chocolate must contain at least 35 percent of chocolate liquor which is a non-alcoholic liquid produced from cocoa beans.

The name "bittersweet chocolate" indicates that it has less sugar and more liquor than semisweet chocolate.

The higher the percentage of cocoa, the less sweet the chocolate is.

There is no need to feel guilty about eating bittersweet chocolate. Consuming bittersweet chocolate on a daily basis is actually good for you. Bittersweet chocolate contains antioxidants that lower blood pressure and help protect your heart.
In honor of Bittersweet Chocolate Day, treat yourself to a few pieces of your favorite variety. Enjoy!
